Charity concert for Rwanda
This concert raised almost 8000 Euros for the
WFWPI school in Rwanda. Thanks goes to Mrs. Fiona Hawlin, for her
dedicated organisation (over 1 1/2 years). Also thanks to the Lamprechtshausen
Music School and to all
of the performers who made a voluntary contribution of their time and musical
skills. Already on Friday morning ,the performers were
in Laufen,
and practised their pieces. McDonalds provided us with breakfasts for
ca the 120 children artists. A packed town hall in Laufen (a Bavarian
/Austrian border town); famous for its early 1300 Gothic church, greeted the
artists . 625 people attended plus the programme – team
of 110 children plus 16 adults and
organisers, on 24th May 2002 evening. The highlight of the evening was Silverbird,
Peace
Ambassador, the last Apache. He believes that music is the creator’s most
valuable form for healing .His contribution of an Indian dance got everyone on
their feet, and joining hands danced in a circle around the auditorium. More
highlights: the International Nigerian Gospel singer Azuka Tuburu with
the pianist Gerhard Pirkelbauer; Wolfgang
and Susanne Lindner from Flachgau; The Salzburger Nockerl (a well
known local group) typical Austrian music with Jakob Brandauer and his
Didgeridoo!; Evita Easton Ballet School; Sophie Collins and Taryn
Fisher Australian born soloists brought us well known melodies; Bagpipes
with Mac Kenzie Dalrimpel; and the MC was done by
Romy Seidl
(ORF),
local TV reporter.. The
PR and raising of funds was done personally by Mr. and Mrs. Hawlin and Mr. And
Mrs. Riedl.( both couples being Scottish / Austrian)
Costs were kept to a minimum
through good planning and the generosity and assistance of
4 local companies, and the tickets were sold through the School and also
placed in local shops. There were several newspaper interviews, again organised
by Mrs. Hawlin, and one live interview on Radio Untersberg. As a result this
evening was an overwhelming success As this was a school project the biggest desire
of both the teachers and the Director was that someone would come and speak
about this country. The honorary Rwanda Consul could organise a
speaker from AHP
(they have 6 schools in Rwanda) to come to Lamprechtshausen
School to share about the situation in Rwanda. He requested we take contact with
the AHP woodworking unit in
Kigale as they could provide us with more furniture. Now we are writing
thank you letters, as indeed we could sponsor this one WFWPI school project in
Rwanda. A follow up for next year is thought to be that
someone from the school come and show some pictures about the project. Another
idea is that several children go with Mrs. Hawlin and visit the school. |
